And there is. literally years in the making. I am a Certified Cicerone®.

I am grateful that the Cicerone® Certification Program exists to help educate folks on what beer is so we in turn can educate others on what beer can be. The syllabi and study materials are well organized to cover all aspects of beer production, service, pairing, evaluation, history, and styles. Each level of certification seems to be an exponential step up in knowledge. The Certified Beer Server online test is a good baseline of information for anyone interested in beer. The Certified Cicerone exam is difficult but passable. I will look for an early 2021 Advanced Cicerone exam date because the difficulty is that much greater. As part of studying I want to get BJCP ranked, medal in homebrew competitions, and publish some freelance writing. I cannot imagine the difficulty of the Master Cicerone level at the moment.

To put the Cicerone® Certification Program into numbers, as of today, there are:

  • 115,202 Certified Beer Servers
  • 3,961 Certified Cicerone®
  • 121 Advanced Cicerone®
  • 18 Master Cicerone®

Of those, thousands of the Certified Beer Servers and Certified Cicerones are from outside of the US. 18 Advanced Cicerones are from Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Mexico and the United Kingdom. And three Master Cicerones are from Canada and the United Kingdom. If you dig through the directory you’ll find a multitude of folks who work at all levels of the industry: breweries, distributors, education, organizations, retailers, suppliers, and writers.

I’ll write more soon on my (apparently successful) study strategies. I just had to crow.
