2018 Updates

A few quick updates to my beer writer/food and culture historian résumé:

  • in April 2016 I completed the Certified Beer Server through Cicerone® Certification Program,
  • in April 2017 I connected Dr. Theresa McCulla at the National Museum of American History and Bill Owens, formerly of Buffalo Bill’s Brewery and American Brewer, regarding Bill donating his archives of magazine, photographs, and ephemera to the Smithsonian,
  • in May 2017 I completed my Master of Arts in History from University of San Diego,
  • in August 2017 I published The Buffalo, Pumpkin, and Hops: A History of Bill Owens and Craft Beer, Hayward, CA: White Mule Press, 2017. ISBN 978-0-9968277-7-5,
  • in March 2018 I substitute taught on the history of beer styles for CHEM 118: The Chemistry of Beer at San José State University which included tastings of Anchor Steam Beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing IPA,
  • in June 2018 I completed the Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs through the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control,
  • in June 2018 I passed the written and demonstration portions of the Certified Cicerone® exam, yet I need to retake the tasting portion,
  • beer judged at the 2014 Alameda County Homebrew Competition (Bay Area Brew-Off (BABO)),
  • volunteered at the 2014 Kraftwerks Silicon Valley Beer Festival, the 2016 American Distilling Institute Spirits Judging, and the 2016, 2017, and 2018 SF Beer Week Opening Galas,
  • in October 2018 I finally joined the North American Guild of Beer Writers.

Why am I writing this now? To revive this blog and to productively move forward in research and writing.
